Question, please help. Federal government job, they said they have to contact my current supervisor for reference, but I don't want my current boss know I'm looking for a new job.
What shall I do now? Help!!

You should give them your supervisor's info. Later on, you will have security checking as well.

But I don't want them to talk to my boss unless the offer become very likely.
If they didn't seriously consider hiring me but letting my current boss knows, it costs me double the price.

Yes. So? they then could put you in a pool after reference check. and then you may stay in the pool for 2-3 years, until it expires.

of course, if LZ is lucky then may hire him right after the check, but he could also just end up in a pool

similar thing happened to me...I told them please only check with my supervisor if they really decide to hire me...never heard from them again(in this case, I am sure I wasn't even in the pool, they just eliminate me altogher) maybe I shouldn't have said that ...you never know if you could last with your current employer...damn if you do, damn if you don't..

I would say, it all depends on your luck and chance. you have to gamble...

You can request new employer NOT to contact your current supervisor, they might

1) ask for reference that can prove what you said in resume is true; or

2) forget about you;

方案一，和你经理讲清楚，一份政府工请他做reference check。领导也是打工的，多个朋友多条路，除非你和他已经交恶，一般领导都是通情达理的，这种情况人家经得多了，知道应该怎么做。以后无非是没有升职了，只要你继续认真做事，及时告诉他进展，那么基本上不影响现在的饭碗。

方案二，同事里找个死党做reference check，要和你有工作关系，级别比你高一些，有资格评价你的工作表现和专业能力。

My boss is a very good guy, but he has somehow promised to re-classify my current position ( to higher level) already. If he learnt I wanted to move somewhere else, he may change his mind and not re-classify my position any more.
PS, if I'm leaving, it's going to take him a good while to find a person and wait till that person become fully functional. So he won't be too happy to know this even though he is a very good person.
