OC Transpo’s largest union has turned down the city’s offer of a four-year contract extension.
The results are contained in the following email sent late Thursday by Craig Watson, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279.
ATU Local 279 Contract Vote April 16th 2015
It is with deep regret that I announce that the contract agreement reached between the ATU Local 279 and the City of Ottawa has been turned down by the membership by a vote of 62% no. The offer was more than fair from the City and it seem internal union politics and possible misrepresentation of the deal reached affected the vote. I’m sure that many of those who voted against this may regret this decision upon further reflection. At the information meetings there were only around 300 members out of approximately 2300 eligible voters, and this may have had an effect on the results.
To John Manconi and his team who worked so hard to achieve this fair deal I personally would like to apologize to them. They truly did their best and this is something that I will always appreciate.
Now for the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of Ottawa who were looking forward to putting this labour issue behind them I apologize as well. They truly do not deserve to go through the labour strife that we faced in 2008 and 2009. Let us truly hope that all parties involved can be reasonable and all issues resolved fairly and equitably in 2016.

Thank you all, Craig Watson President ATU 279,
