Warplane buffs will have a rare — but pricey — opportunity to fly on vintage Second World War-era aircraft this summer, including the iconic Lancaster bomber, one of only two airworthy ‘Lancs’ still in existence. Vintage Wings Canada is selling seats on the flights as a way to raise money for the museum and its partner, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. Vintage Wings is based at the Gatineau airport and was founded by Ottawa tech millionaire Michael Potter.
What: “Fly among the legends. Be part of living history” is how the museum bills the opportunity to fly in formation with the other aircraft over the Ottawa-Gatineau area. “This is a very rare opportunity,” said Carl Martin, spokesman for Vintage Wings. “We even expect to see some people from Britain coming over here for a chance to fly on one of these planes.”
How much: $3,000 (plus tax) and your Air Miles won’t work. Seems expensive, but a first-class Air Canada ticket from Ottawa to Vancouver (through Montreal) costs nearly twice as much, even if the inflight service is better. You’ll also have to join Vintage Wings or the CWHM: $125 for an annual membership. The museum sold two seats on Thursday, the day the program was announced.
When: The first booking in Gatineau is for D-Day, June 6, with other flights available on June 7, 26, 27, 28, 29, July 1 and Sept. 19-20. Flights out of Hamilton are available on June 19-21 and Aug. 15-16. The aircraft will fly three times each day, at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., weather permitting.
The planes: The showpiece is the Avro Lancaster, the four-engine heavy bomber that was the backbone of the Allies’ Bomber Command in the Second World War. The plane belongs to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton and is the same aircraft that someone bid $79,000 to fly in last summer on its transatlantic flight to the United Kingdom, where it appeared in air shows. The Lanc can carry four paying passengers in addition to its flight crew.
The P-51D Mustang and the P-40N Kitty Hawk are fighter planes belonging to Vintage Wings and will escort the Lancaster on its flight. Each fighter has a second seat to carry a paying passenger.
Booking: You can book online at vintagewings.ca or warplane.com or by phoning Vintage Wings at 819-669-9603 or the CWHM at 905-679-4183.
