Also known as pertussis, whooping cough is an infectious disease of the lungs and airways.
Cause: A bacterium called Bordetella pertussis.
Symptoms: Fever, red eyes, runny nose and cough. The coughing intensifies as the infection goes on. Severe coughing fits can last from two to eight weeks. It can take as long as 28 days after exposure for the first symptoms to appear.
The disease is most dangerous for infants, who can have difficulty feeding and breathing, weight loss, convulsions and brain damage.
Risks: Of the estimated 40 million cases in the world each year, about 400,000 die. That’s one per cent.
Canadian cases: From 1,000 to 3,000 a year. Canada has on average one to three deaths from pertussis each year, mostly in infants.
