Quebec provincial police divers have found a body in the Ottawa River near Kettle Island, two weeks after a 14-year-old boy disappeared into nearby waters.
Divers had planned to resume Tuesday their search for Shawn Lalonde-Laframboise, who went missing in early April after venturing onto the thin ice of the Ottawa River near Kettle Island. But on Monday around 4:30 p.m. divers discovered a body in the Outaouais River where they had intended to search.
Gatineau police Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay stressed the remains have yet to be identified.
Lemay explained the river where the divers had planned to search was too turbulent to enter safely when the turbines at Resolute Forest Products’ Gatineau Mill were running. The company was planning to temporarily shut down the turbines for repairs Tuesday. Knowing this, the dive team decided to try again to find the teenager’s remains.
“They were preparing to resume the search tomorrow,” Lemay said. “Instead they discovered a body today.”
