Police car collides with Bentley in Shenzhen, driver of cop car flees the scene on foot
Last night in Shenzhen, a police car reportedly crashed into a Bentley. When police arrived to investigate the crash, the two cars remained, but the driver of the police car was nowhere to be found.
Police say they are investigating the crash and have yet to release any details about the incident.
But that hasn't stopped netizens from speculating about this rare instance of literal hit-and-run committed by police. Pictures from the crash site in suburban Shenzhen were uploaded online late last night and already tens of thousands of netizens have posted their own guesses about what the heck exactly could have happened onto Weibo and NetEase.
Many believe that alcohol may have played a role. "He had to be driving drunk, why else would he run?" reads the top comment on NetEase. However, another netizen sees an alternate source for the driver's fears that would cause him to hightail it outta there: "The cop wasn't afraid of the Bentley, but the power and influence behind the Bentley."
Last year, Bloomberg published an article pointedly titled "You Need to Be Rich to Buy a Bentley. In China, Extra Rich," finding that one new model Bentley is more than three times as expensive in China compared with in the U.S. ($640,000 to 200,500).
Of course, statistically speaking, this had to happen eventually. According to government studies, there are about 450,000 car accidents on Chinese roads each year. The direct and indirect costs of these accidents are estimated to be between $12 to 21 billion, or almost 1.5 percent of China's GNP.
Anyway, there's definitely something fishy going on here. We'll update as more details become available.
