This week’s wild ride involving two stolen vehicles — including a milk truck with an unwilling passenger trapped inside — has led to a raft of fresh criminal charges against a 32-year-old Ottawa man.
Trouble started on Canotek Road in the east end around 9:30 a.m. Monday, when someone called police to report a pickup truck driving erratically. The truck bounced off a fence, then smashed through a gate on Rebecca Street to take a short cut onto the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway (formerly known as the Rockcliffe Parkway).
On the parkway, the pickup forced another car off the road. Police say the pickup driver jumped out of his car, tried to wrestle the other driver out of his vehicle, and threatened him.
The second driver got out, and his attacker took off in the stolen car, according to police.
Still on the parkway, police allege, the man cut off another car and tried to take it from its driver, but didn’t succeed. He took off again, and when he reached Joliette Street he saw a 10-wheel Sealtest milk truck parked outside a convenience store where the driver was making a delivery.
The man got in and drove away. He didn’t realize that driver Alain Parent was in the back of the truck with all the crates of milk.
Trapped in the back, Parent frantically called police on his cellphone as the open rear door flapped wildly and milk containers crashed and broke. Some of his load slipped out the back of the truck and hit cars they passed as they raced through the streets.
Police also say the hijacker hit a variety of other cars, some fences, and at least one light standard.
He stopped on Charlevoix Street where he saw a construction worker and tried to rob the worker of his truck keys. The worker and the assailant scuffled before the attacker abandoned this attempt and returned to the Sealtest truck.
Police found the stolen truck and brought it to a stop along Cathcart Street. Even that was an adventure as police blocked the man’s escape with a cruiser and they say the man hit the cruiser with the milk truck.
One police officer suffered minor injuries in that collision.
Parent and the suspect were both checked out in hospital and released there, though the suspect has been in custody ever since.
Michael Williams, 32, was charged immediately with two counts of robbery, theft over $5,000 and breach of probation.
On Wednesday, police announced a longer list of new charges: Taking a vehicle without consent (as they allege he took the original pickup without the owner’s permission); two counts of dangerous driving, flight from police, operation of a vehicle while impaired by drugs, 11 counts of failing to remain at an accident scene, attempted robbery, five counts of mischief, and assault with a weapon.
Anyone with more information is asked to call the Ottawa police robbery unit at 613-236-1222, extension 5116. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or by downloading the Ottawa police iOS app.
