The family of an Ottawa man is asking for help to find a 37-year-old Ottawa man who ran into the rainforest in the Dominican Republic while visiting the island with his family earlier this week and has been hiding ever since.
Patrick Brown, who goes by the professional name Pat Brainwerx and is a well known disc jockey in Ottawa, has been missing since Monday. The man was on vacation with his parents at a resort in Puerto Plata.
According to reports from the Dominican Republic, Brown was taking a tour of the rainforest near the town of Guananico on Monday when he bolted away from the guide and headed into the dense forest alone.
The guide returned to the closest town to alert police to the bizarre situation. Police then alerted the man’s family, who immediately began searching for him.
According to a statement released on behalf of Brown’s family by his brother Gordon Brown late on Friday, all efforts to find the man have proven fruitless. However, he has been sighted by locals repeatedly, as recently as Friday night, giving the family hope that he is still alive.
“The most important fact of note is that Patrick has been out in the elements for 4 full days and is in immediate need of medical attention. Patrick has not been kidnapped or coerced into hiding,” reads the statement. “Patrick is exhibiting uncharacteristic symptoms of extreme paranoia of an unknown cause, and is evading people. He does not have a prior history of mental illness nor has he ever, or is currently taking medication for any mental illness.”
Compounding the problem is that Brown received survival training during his time as a reservist with the Cameron Highlanders. According to discussion among locals in the Dominican Republic, searchers who have been looking for the man have reported finding camps where leaves were used for bedding and fruit had been collected and consumed.
As the week wore on, search parties expanded from groups of concerned locals to include law enforcement officials. Brown’s brother would not comment on whether the search efforts are being paid for by Brown’s family or the local government in the Dominican Republic.
Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada did not return calls seeking comment on the situation Friday.
An active social media campaign has been drawing the attention of Canadians who have been eager to help, said Brown’s brother Gordon. He said it is amazing how much people from Canada have been able to help them, even with the large geographic span between the countries.

“The wider this gets spread and the more people we can possibly get help from the better,” he said. “You’d be surprised how few the degrees of separation are between you and someone who lives or works in the Dominican. When we first did the original post … it was amazing how many people got in touch and are making a difference.”
The family is currently trying to secure trained rescue dogs and helicopters to aid them with their search, but are finding such things difficult to locate in the Dominican Republic. A Facebook page has been setup for anyone who can offer assistance, www.facebook.com/findpatrickbrown.
