Organizers were calling Saturday’s fundraiser for Ottawa’s Sarah Stott a huge success after the event raised more than $35,000.
Stott, 22, lost both her legs and most of her fingers when she was struck by a train in Montreal on Dec. 8.
Fundraiser organizer Carol Ann MacDonell said the money generated will help cover the costs of Stott’s rehabilitation. MacDonell called the support shown at the event “overwhelming”.
More than 625 people filled Tudor Hall for an evening featuring music, dancing and silent and live auctions.
“I think this was a huge success,” said MacDonell. “I am just absolutely over the moon.”
MacDonell said Stott’s recovery was going “very well.”
Stott was fitted with a prosthetic left leg and took some initial steps in late May at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre. She has been doing core-strengthening exercises, and undergoing therapy and psychological counselling.
“I hope she will remember that thousands of people want to help and support her, and that she is loved by many,” MacDonell said. “She’s a very beautiful young woman who is handling this tragedy as gracefully as possible.”
