Little more than two weeks after a massive fire consumed his new business, Sebastien Saikaley made a $1,000 donation to the CHEO Foundation.

Saikaley was the owner of Encino Taco Shop in the Glebe, which burned down alongside several other local businesses on April 9. The Ottawa Police Service declared the fire to be a result of arson.

Despite losing his business, Saikaley was determined to follow through on his word.

“An agreement is an agreement,” said Saikaley “we made an agreement that we were going to give them 10 cents for each taco and give them a cheque at the end of the month.”

The taco shop made it through its first month of operations, but Saikaley said that even if the fire had happened earlier, he would have honoured the agreement as best he could.

“It just made sense,” said Saikaley. “Even after the fire happened and we lost everything, we still have our health, we can still continue to provide for ourselves. These kids are sick, they need the money more than us right now.”

Saikaley said he was sitting at home two or three days after the fire when he mentioned to his parents that he wanted to give the cheque to CHEO. They agreed that it was a good idea.

Saikaley’s family has a history of donating to CHEO. His father owned the Silver Scissors Salon next door, and Saikaley said his father had been donating for as long as he could remember.

“They’re great supporters of CHEO, and it means so much to the kids at CHEO,” said Len Hanes, director of communications at the CHEO Foundation of the Saikaley family.

Saikaley presented his cheque on Monday morning in front of the burned shell where his business once stood.

“We’re lucky to live in a community where people going through rough times continue to support CHEO,” said Hanes. “The Saikaleys are a great example of that.”
