One of the last video-rental stores in Ottawa will close in a month. Elgin Video’s going-out-of-business sale began Wednesday.

“It’s true,” said manager Michael Varty, who has worked at the store for three years.

“We’re starting to sell off the inventory and we should be closed up by the end of May.”

The store on Elgin Street, north of Somerset Street, has five employees.

“We had an eclectic mix, off-the-beaten-path movies,” he said. That meant high-quality European releases, for instance, such as Ida, a 2013 film from Poland.

“We’ve had the mainstream movies, of course, at the same time,” he said.

“What I’m telling folks is that there are fewer and fewer people coming through the door, and that is a result of any number of things, probably different streaming platforms and stuff.

“It’s like any other business. If you get fewer people that come through the door, it’s not a viable thing anymore.”

His brother, Ben, owns the store, which Michael says has been there for close to 30 years.

The closest video store now for most of his customers will be Glebe Video International on Bank Street, he said.
