Uber says there were more than 14,000 requests for puppies during its four-hour event in Ottawa Thursday.
The ride-sharing app company held a promotion in which businesses could order up puppies for 15 a minute visit.
It cost the businesses $30 to send in the hounds, which were looked after by Uber reps and volunteers from local dog rescues.
The dogs were provided by Sit With Me and Ottawa Dog Rescue, and all were available for adoption.
But with only twelve pups making the rounds, the event was more like a lottery. There were cries of dismay posted all over Twitter.
In Toronto, three were nearly 100,000 requests, or more than twice as many requests for puppies per person than in Ottawa, said Uber spokeswomen Susie Heath.
Uber has been controversial since coming to Ottawa in 2014, raising the ire of traditional taxi companies and of municipal officials.
The city’s crackdown on Uber drivers has resulted in more than $16,000 in fines. Twenty-four drivers have pleaded guilty to 42 violations under the city’s taxi bylaw. The drivers were charged after bylaw officers performed undercover stings.
