Ottawa – The City of Ottawa is challenging residents to break their routine in the month of May and try cycling to work.

May is Bike to Work Month in Ottawa, an annual campaign by the City to promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation and an alternative for motorists. Residents are encouraged to explore new routes using the City’s extensive cycling network, resources and online tools.

Bike to Work Month motivates new and seasoned riders to discover the ease, convenience, efficiency and joy of cycle commuting, whether it be for the month of May, for the entire cycling season or throughout the year. More information on Bike to Work Month, its schedule of activities and resources on cycling routes is available at ottawa.ca/biketowork.

The City also offers a number of resources that have helped make Ottawa the first city in the province recognized by Share the Road Ontario with a gold status as a cycling-friendly city:

Park & Ride or Rack & Roll

Residents who live far enough from work to make a cycling commute daunting might consider biking part of the way. Biking from home to a local Park & Ride location, for instance, cyclists can lock bikes to the public racks and ride the bus to work. Alternatively, cyclists can load their bikes on the front of a bus using OC Transpo’s Rack & Roll racks. From April through October, racks are installed on the front of more than 540 buses, including all articulated and double-decker buses. Bikes can also be transported year round on the O-Train.

Route planning

The City of Ottawa continues to invest in improved cycling infrastructure for residents. The highly developed network of multi-use pathways, cycling lanes, cycle tracks and paved shoulders that connect communities across the city has made it easier than ever to commute to work by bike. The 2015 Ottawa-Gatineau Cycling Map and other valuable resources are available at ottawa.ca/cycling to help cyclists plan their route.

Bike clinics

The City will provide free bike safety inspections in May on Marion Dewar Plaza at City Hall (110 Laurier Avenue West). Professional bike mechanics from Right Bike will provide free quick tune-ups and simple on-the-spot corrections, such as brake adjustments or chain and gear lubrication. For more significant repairs, they will explain what needs to be done and refer users to a bike shop in their own neighbourhood. This service is offered on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Friday, May 1 to Monday, May 18 and from Tuesday, May 26 to Friday, May 29.

Cycling courses

Through its Cycling Education Program, the City offers a number of cycling education courses led by nationally certified instructors to help residents become more comfortable and confident on the road. More information about courses is available at ottawa.ca/bikeschool. One-hour Lunch and Learn sessions can also be arranged for your workplace, for up to 40 people. These sessions, on topics like Introduction to Cycle Commuting and Basic Bike Maintenance, cost $100 and are available in May and June.

Bike to Work pledge

Anyone who bikes to work during the month of May is eligible to win and share in $7,000 in prizes offered by local retailers and organizations. Cyclists can register at ottawa.ca/biketowork and then check in to record kilometres travelled by bike. After registering, participants can also follow the prompts to start a workplace team and spread the word by inviting colleagues to join the challenge.
