The Ottawa Branch of the Monarchist League of Canada is sending a uniquely Canadian gift to the new royal baby: A pair of sealskin mukluks.

The group has been ecstatic since the baby was born Saturday morning, said member Peter Kucherepa.

He purchased the mukluks in Manitoba.

“It’s the quintessential Canadian gift, and it’s a gift of high utility for a baby — to keep their little toesies warm!” he said.

The group had a baby shower of sorts about a month ago, where they celebrated the impending birth, but no further official celebration is planned. Yet.

“It’s a little hard to get the date right on these things,” he said.

The OBMLC’s FaceBook page also urged other Canadians to have their own baby showers sometime in the spring or summer.

Among the suggestions: Keeping it simple with iced tea, maple shaped cookies, and casual clothes.

“It’s spring/summer, not the time for fancy dress … ,” the post says.

The new princess is fourth in line for the throne, behind Princes Charles, William and George.

“I can’t really speak for everyone, but (the sealskin mukluks) are a Canadian tradition. I don’t really think it’ll offend anyone. That’s not what people are going to be thinking about today,“ said OBMLC’s media contact Philippe Chartrand.
