The Ottawa branch of the Monarchist League of Canada thinks Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is a fitting name for the new royal princess — even if Twitter commentators have the usual mix of opinions.
Philippe Chartrand, spokesman for the league, said there’s a lot of history to the name, starting with the princess’s grandfather, Prince Charles.
“First of all it’s the female name of Charles … There’s Charlottetown, P.E.I., named after Princess Charlotte (queen consort of Great Britain as the wife of King George III), and then there’s the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, so there’s a bit of a Canadian connection,” he said.

The league also thinks the order of the names was appropriate. Chartrand said the modern couple probably wants to give the baby her own sense of self, while still honouring Princess Diana and the Queen.
Chartrand lost his bet for the name, though. He went with Alice at the last second, meaning he’ll owe people “a few coffees,” he said.
The Twitterverse blew up after the princess’s name was announced.
Below are a few highlights of the love, hate and regret it caused.
