Establishing a “House of Sport” and a “Curling Centre of Excellence” are among the city’s economic development goals for the next four years.

Council’s finance and economic development committee on Tuesday approved a city staff strategy on economic development that outlined broad plans in four areas: attracting investment and expanding existing businesses; entrepreneurship; tourism; and research tools.

Many of the details are still to be worked out, but councillors gave the thumbs up in principle to find ways to do everything from support the local music industry to market Ottawa’s employment lands to prospective businesses.

The House of Sport and Curling Centre ideas — and they are still just ideas — would bring together various groups working in these fields to make it easier to focus their efforts on, say, bringing a major sporting event to Ottawa.

There was also some discussion on how Ottawa could do a better job marketing itself. Saad Bashir, the city’s director for economic development, pointed to the Life in Calgary website as something Ottawa could aspire to.

“We have more to offer than that ‘other city’, which I won’t name again,” joked Bashir, who used to work in Calgary.

Some of the proposed initiatives will require additional funding, which was not approved at Tuesday’s meeting. Instead, the funding for economic development initiatives will be part of council’s strategic-initiatives sessions to take place in June and July.
