Stephen Millar, who served as Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan from September 2009 until May 2014, will deliver an audio-visual presentation on culture and geography of this fascinating country.

Kazakhstan is the world's nine largest country, spanning both Europe and Asia and stretching through two time zones. Little known before it gained its independence from the USSR in December 1991, it is situated between Russian Siberia and Western China and lies well north of the Indian sub-continent.

It is at the geographic centre of the Eurasian continent. The country has experienced rapid economic growth over the last 15 years, which has reinforced its status as an important regional economic and political player.

Kazakhstan shares many geographic, climatic and cultural characteristics with Canada - from its seemingly boundless steppes which remind one of the Canada's prairies to the towering mountains which form its border with China and its Central Asian neighbours. Its gleaming new capital, As ana, designed by leading international architects, has overtaken Ottawa as the world's second coldest capital city.

Like Canada, Kazakhstan is also a bilingual and multicultural country, with a strong respect for ethnic and religious differences.

Notwithstanding its growing importance as a trade and investment partner for Canada, Kazakhstan remains unknown to most Canadians.
Organized by the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society in Association with the Ottawa Public Library
