The Ottawa Fire Service’s marine rescue unit was called to the Ottawa River rapids near Parkdale Avenue on Saturday morning after several passersby called 911 because they mistakenly believed a man was stranded on the rocks and in distress.

But David Crichton wasn’t in any danger. In fact, he was just surfing The Dessert, the last wave downstream from a series of rapids that kayakers and surfers have been riding for years.

“Just because someone is using the river doesn’t mean they’re in distress,” said brother Michael Crichton, 38.

For the record, the man did not need to be rescued and he, like other experienced surfers, said he hoped the number of false alarm calls can be reduced or eliminated through public education about the river sport.
