Christopher Hoare is a dedicated family man with an “impeccable” work ethic, his former boss told an Ottawa court Monday.
Hoare was a “phenomenal” hard-working real estate agent — the best in Ottawa — testified Paul
Rushforth.
“He was the ‘king of the kings,’ Rushforth testified.
Hoare was also “a little unusual” in that he religiously blocked off more than two hours in the
early evening to be with his wife and five children and would not take business calls until the
family supper and other domestic chores were over.
Hoare is pleading not guilty to charges of attempting to murder his wife, aggravated assault and
choking. He pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon.
Hoare is accused of hitting his 43-year-old wife, Kirsten Côté, several times with a baseball bat in the
garage of the family’s Orléans home and trying to suffocate her on April 2, 2014.
The bat had been an Easter present to the couple’s son.
Rushforth agreed with Hoare’s lawyer, Eric Granger, that Hoare was popular among his fellow employees and was never heard to utter anything but positive comments about his wife and children.
“He was the sweetest guy you’d ever meet,” agreed Rushforth. There was “not a mean bone in his body.”
The trial has heard that the family’s finances were in shambles and at the time of the attack, 100
per cent of Hoare’s income was being garnished by the Canada Revenue Agency.
“I’d never seen the likes of it,” said Rushforth who asked Hoare whether he needed help.
“Chris is a very private person,” he added. “He said, ‘Everything’s under control. I can handle it’. ‘
