A former Ottawa real-estate agent accused of trying to kill his wife could offer no rational explanation Thursday as to why he wanted to render her unconscious when he attacked her in early April.

But Chris Hoare denied it was a premeditated act.

During questioning by Crown prosecutor Michael Boyce, Hoare could not explain why he didn’t take a more benign option to prevent his wife, Kirsten Cote, from going shopping and discovering for the first time that the family bank account was empty and their credit card maxed out.

Hoare has testified that he had hoped his wife would fall on their icy driveway and hit her head, or break an arm or leg — injuries that would delay her shopping trip.

Ultimately, he lured her into the garage at the family’s Orleans home with a promise he had a “surprise” for her. He urged her to close her eyes and then hit her twice with their son’s aluminium baseball bat.

Boyce asked why he hadn’t tried the same ruse and simply taken her car keys or bank cards?

“You thought of a plan to take her into the garage. Why not in the kitchen and take her keys?” asked Boyce.

“I don’t know,” replied the 45-year-old father of five young children.

“Or take her cards?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your mind jumped right away to harming her.”

“It got there, yes.”

Hoare’s first thought, said Boyce, that he was to physically harm his wife.

“I didn’t want to hurt her,” said Hoare.

“You hit her on the head with a bat. Why did you want to knock her out?”

“It was simply the decision I made,” responded Hoare. “It came into my mind and I did it. I have no reasonable explanation.”

Hoare had lied to his wife for years about their financial state, the court has heard, because he was fearful of her discovering the truth and divorcing him.

He owed the Canada Revenue Agency $200,000 on the day of the attack and the agency was garnisheeing 100 per cent of his wages.

Hoare has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and choking.

He is being tried by judge alone.
