More than 20,000 pro-life supporters are expected to rally on Parliament Hill today at noon to take part in the 18th annual March for Life.
Guest speakers will include author Eric Metaxas, pro-life MPs, religious leaders and Jim Hughes, national president of the Campaign Life Coalition, which organizes the event.
Like last year, many demonstrators are taking aim at Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and his strong stance in favour of women’s abortion rights.
Canadian Life Coalition distributed a graphic flyer in 21 ridings across Canada this week that depicts Trudeau’s face next to a photo of a fetus. It was part of a joint campaign with the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform — called #No2Trudeau on social media — that seeks to influence voters’ opinions on abortion.
A number of smaller pro-choice counter protests are also set to take place Thursday afternoon, including one by a group called “Secular Ontario,” which objects to high-school students being sent to the pro-life event by publicly funded Catholic school boards.
Wednesday night, some 400 people gathered for a candlelight vigil to “victims of abortion” at the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights Monument downtown.
