Suspended Sen. Patrick Brazeau’s assault and sexual assault trial entered its fourth day Thursday after breaking in April, and the long cross-examination of his chief accuser continues.
Brazeau’s charges stem from an alleged argument at the Gatineau home he shared with the alleged victim in 2013.
The woman — on her third full day of cross examination — can’t be named under a court order.
On Thursday morning, defence lawyer Gérard Larocque led her through detail after detail of her statement to police and her court testimony. He says there are inconsistencies.
For instance, did the woman claim that Brazeau choked her with his hand or his arm? The police video interview made after the alleged attack seems to indicate a hand but in court she said he used his arm.
And what about being propelled down the stairs, the defence lawyer asked. She told police he threw her downstairs, but told the court he pushed her down.
Complicating the analysis is the fact that her first language is Spanish and she sometimes stumbled over words during the police interview in French.
“For me throw and push are the same thing,” the woman finally said after half an hour on the point.
It had been scheduled as a three-day trial but is expected to resume next week.
More to come.
