The bacteria that causes Legionnaire’s disease has been discovered at the federal Place du Portage office complex in Gatineau, the Public Works department confirmed Thursday.

The department said there is little risk to employees of the Phase III building on Laurier Street.

Legionnaire’s disease is a lung infection caused by the legionellosis bacteria, which is found in water or wet soil. The organism was identified in 1976, after more than 200 delegates at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia fell ill and 34 died.

Health authorities traced the outbreak to the hotel air conditioning system and warned that cooling towers, or evaporating condensers, in large modern buildings could spread the bacteria through ventilation systems.

Though serious for those who are infected, the pneumonia-like disease is not contagious.

Canada has had outbreaks of the disease in Toronto and Quebec City.

More to come …
