A tornado warning has been issued by Environment Canada for some areas in Eastern Ontario.
Sharbot Lake, Lanark County, Smiths Falls, Perth were under the warning issued at 4:51 p.m. as a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was moving eastward across Lanark county.
“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the warning read. “Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.”
Environment Canada warned that damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall were also possible.
The weather agency suggested people in affected areas stay away from outside walls and windows and leave free-standing shelters, such as mobile homes.
“As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris,” Environment Canada said.
A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for Ottawa.
The temperature was expected to drop from 29 C to a low of 18 C, along with a 60-per-cent chance of showers or thunderstorms and a risk of a severe thunderstorm.
“Scattered thunderstorms are moving northeastward toward or through portions of the above regions,” an Environment Canada statement reads. “A few of these storms may be capable of producing damaging winds.”
The weather agency warned that conditions were favourable Monday afternoon for severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts, which can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
Locally heavy rain, hail or even a tornado are also possible, Environment Canada said.
