School’s out for Munster Elementary.
Students at the rural school in southwest Ottawa will be moved to one of two other schools come September, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board announced Tuesday.
The English public board had been looking into closing its emptiest school since January.
School board trustees voted to move students to either Richmond Public School or A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary in Stittsville after deeming Munster’s low enrolment “not sufficient to provide students with an enriched educational experience.”
There are approximately 55 students currently enrolled at the school — about a quarter of its capacity — and the school board did not expect the area around the school would see much population growth that could have boosted those numbers.
The projected structure of the school’s staff would have meant that children would be grouped into one of only three split classes: junior and senior kindergarten, Grades 1 to 3, or Grades 3 to 5.
Munster’s final-year students will be given the option to attend Goulbourn middle school next year.
The school building will continue to be used for community activities.
