Police were called, but the woman — and the ducklings — were gone before they arrived.

“Any driving behaviour that puts other motorists in danger is a problem,” the OPP said in a release Wednesday. “It is the responsibility of Ontario motorists to direct their attention to driving safely.”

Police say motorists should call 911 if they see animals on the highway that are posing a hazard, but they should not get out of their vehicles to try to help.

Last year, a Quebec jury convicted 25-year-old Emma Czornobaj of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving. She had stopped her car on Autoroute 30 near Candiac, Que., in 2010 to help a family of ducks stranded on the highway.

Moments later, a motorcycle slammed into the back of her car, killing 50-year-old André Roy and his daughter Jessie, 16, who riding on the back of the motorcycle.
