New Delhi: As elections are approaching, speculations over as to who will be the country’s next prime, whether or not the politicians with criminal background should be allowed to contest polls, what do the youth think about entire election process and what are their preferences and expectations from the next government; these are some of the many questions that are being asked by different survey companies.

The surprising part is that the outcome of these surveys has highlighted a very astonishing trend: Gen X wants to be governed by “dictator” who can “get things done” since the democratic government has failed on several fronts.

According to Hindustan Times Youth Survey 2013, 52.1 % respondents said they would be better off in a dictatorship which they see as a system of governance “to get things done”.

Although the statistics cannot be heavily relied upon as the survey was conducted upon 5012 urban youth in the 18-25 age group in fourteen cities across the country – Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Indore, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, yet the 2014 Lok Sabha election may witness a completely-changed pattern of voting since the urban youth is in search of ideology to reckon with.

Politics is no longer the one way street to be travelled only to vote, the youth are even ready to be politicians. According to the HT-MaRS Youth Survey 2013, 21.7% youth in Lucknow and 21.3% in Patna see their future with a party, while only 10% in Ahmedabad think so. In Mumbai, only 9.5% youth are keen on being politically active.

A Times Now, C-Voter and India TV survey suggest that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party and the NDA the largest coalition as against the ruling Congress and UPA. The survey also highlights the finding on Narendra Modi who is by far the preferred prime ministerial contender over Rahul Gandhi.

There was another poll survey conducted by CNN-IBN, Hindu, and CSDS Election Tracker, the findings of which differ from the predictions made by the Times Now, C-Voter and India TV survey, the crux of the surveys remain identical– Congress losing heavily and the BJP not gaining enough to win the election outright either.
