A young military corporal has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities say he abandoned his Bernese Mountain dog in a garbage dumpster back in February.
The dog had been thrown out with the trash on a day when temperatures dipped to — 15 C. When it was rescued, animal-welfare authorities noted the animal was dehydrated and emaciated.
Cpl. Kevin Page, 22, is facing criminal charges of wilfully causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. It’s alleged he abandoned his dog in the dumpster on Feb. 28.
The corporal, who lives in Centretown, is also charged with neglecting and failing to provide suitable and adequate care for the dog from September 2014 to February 2015.
The criminal charges were filed by an Ottawa Humane Society agent and none of the allegations has been proven.
The Citizen is waiting to hear back from the military and the humane society.
