The chill didn’t keep people away, as hundreds streamed through the Glebe this morning hunting for bargains at the Great Glebe Garage Sale.
Coffees in hand, bundled against the cold, shoppers hauled wagons and trolleys, and many had their treasures safely stowed in backpacks.
Ryan Armstrong, 12, (turning 13 on Monday, he noted) was loading into a silver Grand Caravan a lawn mower that he bought for $10.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said his escort, Allan Greevy of Montreal, a friend of Armstrong’s grandparents.
The plan for the lawn mower is to build a go-kart.
“I want it for the engine,” Armstrong said.
Follow Citizen reporter Tyler Dawson as he covers the Glebe sale.
At the moment Armstrong is working on a fully functional train, made from the parts of a small ATV.
“He’s been doing this since he was four,” said Greevy.
Added Armstrong: “This is my second lawn mower that I’ve ever bought at a garage sale.”
Down the street and around the corner, Emily Dandy was selling some of her possessions to finance a trip to India.
“I feel like if I could sell all this stuff I’ll be able to pay for some accommodation,” she said. “I’m trying to appeal to emotion.”
She graduated from the University of Ottawa’s law school last year and has finished her articling. It’s now time for a month-long break.
“Then come back and be responsible.”
One treasure she’s selling is a collection of original Barbie Pogs, one of them unopened. Apparently, she said, Pogs are coming back in schools.
After a small trolley collision, Monica Landon from Stittsville and Shannon Holt from Kanata, friends since elementary school, set about looking through a table.
“We wake up and come at like, quarter to seven,” said Holt.
They bring a big van and hunt for furniture and other large items. Then they return at the end of the day to pick up their finds.
“That way you get the good bigger stuff when it’s early,” said Holt.
She found a headboard for $10 and a pair of designer jeans for $6.
Landon picked up a coffee table, a vintage GI Joe for her kids and a skateboard.
