Firefighters in Gatineau responded to a residential address late Monday night after reports of a fire in a shed that was housing a generator and batteries.
Beside the shed was a 400 lb. propane tank which was about half ful, according to the home’s owner.
With no fire hydrants available in the immediate area, firefighters were forced to truck in water. While they were preparing to tackle the blaze, rising pressure in the tank forced a relief value to open. The escaping gas was ignited by the nearby fire, causing what firefighters call a “flashover”, sending flames shooting into the air.
It took five water tankers to extinguish the blaze and keep buildings surrounding the propane tank from catching fire. The home, located at 2042 Chemin Montreal Ouest, had two occupants that needed to be evacuated.
The blaze was extinguished by 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Damages are estimated at $35,000.
