When Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, and his wife Máxima arrived in Ottawa on Wednesday, May 27, he became the first Dutch king to pay a state visit to Canada.

They were welcomed by the Governor General at Rideau Hall, where they planted a tree in the gardens. From there they visited Parliament to be greeted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whom they met earlier this month at ceremonies in the Netherlands to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation.

This visit, however, is for more than just the exchange of diplomatic well wishes. The couple, accompanied by Dutch government officials, will travel to Waterloo, Ont., to sign agreements strengthening research ties between Dutch and Canadian institutions, and to Beamsville, Ont., where they and delegates from Dutch agricultural companies will inspect CosMic Plants, an orchid farm owned by two brothers of Dutch descent.

Connecting with Dutch immigrants is a goal of the visit, says the Netherlands embassy in Ottawa. Canada has a sizeable, if not especially visible, Dutch-Canadian population.

“Of 34 million Canadians, more than a million have Dutch roots, forming one of the largest as well as best-integrated groups in the country,” says the embassy.

The state visit will conclude in Toronto on May 29 with courtesy calls to Queen’s Park, tours of startup technology businesses and a reception for the Dutch community. From June 1 to 3 the Dutch royals will travel in the United States, visiting Grand Rapids, Mich., home of a large Dutch community, as well as Chicago and Washington, D.C.

It will also be the first official appearance in the U.S. for Willem-Alexander, who became king upon the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix, two years ago, and his Argentine-born wife, Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti.
