Eight people, including an Ottawa man, have been arrested and nine weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle have been seized following a five-month police probe into gun trafficking in eastern Ontario.

The investigation, dubbed Project Harden, was led by Ontario Provincial Police and involved the OPP’s organized crime enforcement bureau and its provincial weapons enforcement unit, as well as Ottawa and Cornwall, Ont. police forces, the RCMP, Sûreté du Québec, the Canada Border Services Agency and Akwesasne Mohawk police.

Search warrants were executed in Cornwall, Ottawa, and South Glengarry, Ont., as well as Akwesasne Mohawk Territory and Longueuil, Que.

Seized were: Six prohibited handguns and two restricted handguns, an AK-47 assault rifle, a silencer, high-capacity weapons magazines and ammunition, as well as quantities of cocaine and marijuana.

Eight people are facing a combined total of 107 charges, including drug trafficking, possession of dangerous weapons, knowingly transferring firearms, possession of the proceeds of crime and more.

Police identified those arrested as Masaed Rashed, 27, of Ottawa; Pierre Nassif, 39, South Glengarry; Devin Lazore, 21, of Akwesasne; Paul Nassif, 36, of Cornwall; Hussein Yassin, 40, of Cornwall; Sean Carl, 25, of Cornwall; François Billard, 29, of Cornwall; and Sonia Bernier, 32, of St-Hubert, Que.

Billard, Carl and Yassin were released on a promise to appear in June. The remaining accused were to appear in Cornwall court Thursday.
