After six years of hearings across the country and testimony from 7,000 witnesses, the work of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission will culminate in Ottawa with four days of events beginning Sunday.

Here are some of them. All are open to the public and admission is free.

Sacred Fire and Sunrise Ceremonies: May 31 to June 3, Victoria Island (no cameras).

Walk for Reconciliation: May 31, from École secondaire de l’Île (255 Rue Saint Rédempteur, Gatineau) to Marion Dewar Plaza (Ottawa City Hall).

Thousands will walk in solidarity Sunday with survivors of Indian Residential Schools. The walk will be led by six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes and former NHL star Joé Juneau.

It begins at 12 p.m., and will make its way from the school to Portage Bridge, and on to Victoria Island. A shorter walk will begin at Victoria Island and end at Ottawa City Hall, with speeches and entertainment.

Ottawa police have advised drivers that there could be traffic disruptions between noon and 3 p.m. due to rolling road closures on Wellington and Elgin streets and on Laurier Avenue West.

Film Screening: May 31 and June 1, National Gallery of Canada (380 Sussex Dr.).

Filmmakers will be on hand for a brief discussion after these evening screenings. Film titles to be confirmed.

TRC Final Report: June 2, Delta Ottawa (101 Lyon St.).

The Truth and Reconciliation Commissioners will release their findings on Indian Residential Schools. Join in person at Delta Ottawa, or tune in via webcast for this historic event.

Statement Gathering: June 1-2, Delta Ottawa.

The TRC wants to hear from everyone who has been affected by the Indian Residential Schools. That includes survivors of the schools, their families, community members – anyone whose life has been affected by the schools or their legacy.

Honorary Witness Ceremony: June 1-2, Delta Ottawa.

Honorary witnesses are public figures who take on a special responsibility for sharing the TRC’s message of truth-telling and reconciliation. All are invited to listen carefully. New honorary witnesses will be inducted during the Ottawa closing event.

Sharing Circles with Survivor Committee: June 1-2, Delta Ottawa

Share with others in a sharing circle facilitated by a member of the Indian Residential Schools Survivor Committee.

Actions of Reconciliation: June 1, Delta Ottawa.

As the TRC mandate draws to an end, national organizations will be invited to state their commitment to continued efforts towards reconciliation.

Learning Place: June 1-2, Delta Ottawa.

Learn about the schools Aboriginal children attended in Ontario, and about the effect this experience had on their lives as they became adults. Have a conversation with someone who can tell you something you might not have known before.

Church Archives: June 1-2, Delta Ottawa.

Historic photographs of students and schools, as well as other documents from the archives of the church entities that operated the Indian Residential Schools will be on display.

Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams: June 3, Rideau Hall (1 Sussex Dr.)

Children and youth from across the region of Ottawa will team up with guests at Rideau Hall for an honouring ceremony and planting a Garden of Hearts in memory of children that went missing while at residential school.
