The Ottawa Food Bank is inviting everyone out to Food Aid Day at City Hall Thursday for breakfast, lunch, music and the Mayor’s Rural Expo.

The day starts with a complimentary pancake breakfast from 7-9 a.m., supplied by Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm. Cash donations will be welcome.

At lunchtime, there’s the $10 Food Aid BBQ lunch, provided by The Works, between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For entertainment, local country artists Jordan McIntosh and Brea Lawrenson will perform at 11:30 a.m and 12:15 p.m. respectively.

The Rural Expo will feature the always popular celebrity cow milking competitions, as well as a number of animal displays.

Proceeds from the event will be used to buy local ground beef for people requiring food assistance and quality protein products.

“Thanks to this program we’re able to provide nutrient-rich beef to families and individuals who otherwise may not be able to include it in their diets,” said Michael Maidment, Ottawa Food Bank’s executive director, in a news release.

“It’s always so wonderful to see how our city comes together during this event. Donors, volunteers, and supporters gather from rural and urban corners of the city to help our neighbours get beyond hunger.”

The Food Bank says it is more difficult than ever to provide beef products year-round as prices have been steadily increasing.

Last year’s Food Aid Day raised $134,000, compared to $160,000 in 2013.

Donations can be made by calling 613-738-CFRA from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. or at the website www.ottawafoodbank.ca to make an online donation.
