Police hope that cold, hard cash triggers memories.

Ottawa police are offering a $50,000 reward for any information that would lead to the capture and conviction of the people responsible for gunning down a 27-year-old man in February.

Yusuf Ibrahim, a convicted bank robber and former member of the Ledbury-Banff Crips, was the city’s first homicide victim of the year, and was the first fatal shooting victim after a year of record gun violence in Ottawa in 2014.

Ibrahim, or “Grinch” as he was called, was shot in the back and legs while he slept on a living room couch at 181 Forestglade Cres. after a night of partying in the ByWard Market. The party continued in unit 32 of the south-end housing co-op, where police later recovered small amounts of crack cocaine as they processed a homicide scene.

Police believe the motive in the case is a settling of accounts over a perceived sign of disrespect.

Homicide detectives have made progress in investigating what they believe is a targeted and gang-related killing — identifying a rented getaway vehicle that sped away from the homicide scene with three occupants inside and identifying three different people who would have been partying with Ibrahim in the hours before he was killed. One of those people is now charged with plotting to steal 27 guns from former senator Rod Zimmer’s home in what police allege was a plan to sell the guns on the black market. Police also searched the stretch of road from where Ibrahim was killed to the Highway 417 on-ramp looking for a murder weapon. No handgun was recovered.
