Representatives shepherding the proposals for the Science and Technology Museum’s redesign say they’re pleased and a little surprised at the public’s reception.

“So far the response has been very positive and we’ve been getting very detailed responses from people,” saidGabrielle Trépanier, who’s in charge of research for the museum.

“Even more than I expected. People aren’t just saying ‘oh, it looks nice’, they’re sitting down and writing paragraphs.” she said.

Trépanier said the museum has received more than 1,500 survey responses since public consultation was launched on Thursday.

On Saturday, the museum brought a roadshow of sketches and plans to St. Laurent Shopping Centre, where staff sought public feedback.

In addition to the building sketches, people also got the chance to work on a 120-year-old calculator and kids could fool around with blue mouldable sand.

Displays were set up around 10:30 a.m. and staff said more than 100 people stopped by within the first hour.

People of all ages stopped by to examine the displays and the various toys.

“We’ve been to the museum so many times, we want to see something new, similar to how they renovated the Nature Museum,” said Isabelle Lemon, a school volunteer, who popped in with her daughter, Anika Gingras, 12, who’s also a regular museumgoer.

“The designs are very cool,” Anika said. “It’s definitely a big improvement to the museum. It’s going to be fun and big.”

Staff will be at St. Laurent Shopping Centre again Sunday between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. looking for more input.

Museum staff and displays will be at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum on June 13, and at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on June 14 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The online survey will be available until June 20.
