Books, furniture, clothes, printers and whatever else you can think of … all was up for grabs on the first day of the annual Spring Giveaway Weekend on Saturday.
The City of Ottawa announced this year’s giveaway weekend to encourage people to offer their unwanted items to each other as opposed to throwing them in the trash. For many, the event is a real treasure hunt.
“It wasn’t supposed to start until eight but we had people here at six o’clock,” said Wilf Kelly, an Iris St. resident who filled his front lawn with unwanted items. “People seem to be grabbing the antique stuff.”
The rules for putting items out are pretty simple: place them on the curb and put a sign or a sticker on them that says “free” so people know they are there for the taking.
“It’s pretty busy here, so we had a couple of hundred people come by,” said Tara Lewis who lives on Parkdale Avenue. “We got rid of most the stuff we put out. Whatever’s left, we’ll donate.”
Spring Giveaway Weekend continues on Sunday.
