Here’s how long-term care facilities measure up against nine indicators tracked by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

Falls by residents


The indicator: Percentage of long-term care residents who fell in the last 30 days.

Ontario: 14.2 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 14.5 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Élisabeth Bruyère Residence (8 per cent), Osgoode Care Centre (8.4 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Granite Ridge (22.3 per cent), Centre de soins de long durée Montfort (21.7 per cent)

Pressure ulcers


The indicator: Percentage of residents who had a pressure ulcer that got worse over time.

Ontario: 3 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 2.9 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Starwood (0.6 per cent), Osgoode Care Centre (1 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: West End Villa (6.9 per cent), Grace Manor (6 per cent)

Antipsychotics


The indicator: Percentage of residents taking an antipsychotic drug without a diagnosis of psychosis, typically to control agitation and anxiety among those with dementia.

Ontario: 30.6

Champlain LHIN: 31

Ottawa’s best: Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre, veterans unit (14.5 per cent), St. Patrick’s Home (16.5 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Centre de soins de longue durée Montfort (46.5 per cent), Leisureworld Madonna (41 per cent)

Restraints


The indicator: Use of daily physical restraints on residents, which can lead to injury and falls and increase confusion and agitation.

Ontario: 8.9 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 13.8 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Centre de soins de longue durée Montfort (2.5 per cent), Élisabeth Bruyère Residence (2.7 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Manoir Marochel (36.8 per cent), St. Patrick’s Home (33 per cent)

Improved physical functioning


The indicator: Percentage of residents whose physical functioning improved over time.

Ontario: 31.1 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 32.6 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Hillel Lodge (45.2 per cent), Élisabeth Bruyère Residence (39.9 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Manoir Marochel (18.4 per cent), Sarsfield Colonial (20.9)

Worsened physical condition


The indicator: Percentage of residents whose physical functioning worsened over time.

Ontario: 35.8 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 35.5 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Forest Hill (24.9), Villa Marconi (25.8 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Peter D. Clark Centre (46.4 per cent), Granite Ridge (42.2 per cent)

Depression


The indicator: Percentage of residents whose symptoms of depression got worse over time.

Ontario: 25.9 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 27.1 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Centre de soins de longue durée Montfort (1.7 per cent), Élisabeth Bruyère Residence (10.7 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Starwood (43.7 per cent), West End Villa (43.4 per cent)


Residents at Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre are more likely to report worsening pain, the report reveals.

Pain


The indicator: The percentage of residents who said they were experiencing moderate to significant pain on assessment.

Ontario: 7.9 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 9.5 per cent

Ottawa’s best: The Armstrong Home (1.3 per cent), Sarsfield Colonial (1.4 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre, community unit (22.8 per cent), Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre, veterans unit (20.6 per cent)

Worsened pain


The indicator: Percentage of residents whose pain worsened over time.

Ontario: 11.2 per cent

Champlain LHIN: 11.1 per cent

Ottawa’s best: Villa Marconi (3.6 per cent), Garden Terrace (4.8 per cent)

Ottawa’s worst: Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre, veterans unit (19.1 per cent), Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre, community unit (19 per cent)
