Multiple witnesses heard what they described as a gunshot during an operation by Gatineau police in Ottawa’s Lowertown neighbourhood late Thursday afternoon, in an incident that was caught on video.
Police stopped a car at the corner at the corner of Dalhousie and Bolton streets around 5:30 p.m., and multiple officers surrounded the vehicle with guns drawn, witnesses said.
“There were all kinds of cops, and they had bullet-proof vests, and then they had two vans and they were going back and forth and I thought well, they’re looking for something,” said Cecile Morgan, who was out walking her dog near her home on nearby Boteler St.
“And then there was a police car and an ambulance and I thought, what’s going on?”
One witness filmed a video from the balcony of his apartment at 110 Bolton St. that shows the scene shortly after police detained a man and a woman. Moments later, once both were already in police custody, a gunshot can be heard.
The witness said the gunshot — which he said he could smell from his balcony — appeared to have come from inside a police vehicle. He and another bystander said the gunshot seemed to be accidental.
Ottawa police said “there has not been any information provided to us” about the incident.

A car with Quebec plates is towed on Dalhousie St. at Bolton St. in lowertown Ottawa, Thursday, June 11, 2015. Witnesses said an arrest was made, and a shot was fired.
