Ottawa police are reminding Ottawans to lock all their doors as data shows break-and-enters are on the rise.

According to the Ottawa Police Services break and enter unit, houses with unlocked front, back or patio doors are at a higher risk of being victimized by a residential B&E.

In the carefree summer months, homeowners open windows and forget to close them, so police remind residents to ensure that doors, windows and all access points to the home are closed and locked when people aren’t around.

Additionally, valuables should be kept away from windows and out of sight.

The Ottawa police website points out that B&E suspects tend to target homes that are not visibly occupied.
