A jury found Ottawa’s Mark Haslett guilty of manslaughter — but not murder as charged — in the fatal stabbing of Rolland Laflamme on Feb. 11, 2013. Haslett, 27, knifed his roommate Laflamme for continuing to whistle even when asked to stop. Haslett testified in his own defence that he was being persecuted, stalked and tortured by sounds, and voices. He figured Laflamme was the main agent of what his lawyer called “sound torture”. He thought people were talking about him.
Haslett testified he believed he was hearing secret messages from TV broadcasts and bought a tape recorder to capture the voices. Haslett used the device to tape the murder, and later told police where to find the recording.
A defence lawyer for Haslett said he’s “delighted” by the verdict.
