Bright sun and clear skies set the tone perfectly for Day One of WestFest on Saturday.

The two-day festival held in Westboro village benefited from the clear afternoon, drawing in crowds of enthusiastic festgoers from near and far.

“We don’t live in Westboro, so that’s why we’re not here regularly,” said Michael Shoulder, a Lowertown resident who was at his second WestFest and his first in “three or four years.”

His wife, Reena Shoulder, said it was her first time.

Busker Yoshi Chladny had the crowd entertained while he juggled fire at Westfest Saturday.

“But I enjoy the community atmosphere,” said Michael Shoulder.

“It’s all very lively, lots of stuff going on in the streets. Lots of little activities.”

Street magicians, roaming food and beverage vendors and short martial arts demonstrations were a few of the events that drew in crowds of spectators.

Even the event volunteers were getting into the spirit of the festival.

Gabe Martin, a first-time volunteer who wanted to “get to know the community,” said that the bustling festival seemed to have a positive effect on its attendees.

“There’s a good vibe going on,” he said.

The Flava Factory, which bills itself as Ottawa’s only street dance studio, showed off some talent at Westfest in Westboro Saturday.

Started in 2004, the 10-block street party has become known as a community touchpoint, something Reena Shoulder was quick to point out.

“It does draw people in from other places around the city,” she said. “I think people come to WestFest as a destination.”
