Bomb blast rocks river

By ANDREW SEYMOUR, Ottawa Sun

A crude but potentially deadly floating homemade bomb exploded on the Ottawa River near Hawkesbury Sunday, only minutes after a curious boater had examined the device.

Hawkesbury OPP Const. Pierre Dubois said a local boater found a plastic tray covered with mesh screen floating near the town Sunday afternoon.

"He took it in his boat and started to play with it," said Dubois, adding the boater brought the strange find back to the Hawkesbury Marina before putting it back in the water near Hamilton Island.

'HEARD A BOOM'

"He got rid of it and then he heard a boom and there was an explosion," said Dubois.

Dubois said it was the second bomb discovered on the river. A similar device was turned over to the Quebec provincial police after a boater discovered it floating near the Quebec shoreline on Aug. 3.

Dubois said the device was not extremely powerful, but could cause serious injury or death if it went off near an unsuspecting person.

"It's a pipe bomb that's floating," he said. "It would probably explode if someone hit it with a boat."

The OPP's Explosive Disposal Unit was expected to arrive in Hawkesbury last night to examine the device.
