An estimated 100,000 people had taken advantage of clear skies over the weekend to attend Westfest as the two-day Westboro Village festival drew to a close on Sunday evening.

Organizers said highlights of this year’s 10-block street party included the good weather and the fact the main stage was moved back to Richmond Road for the first time since 2007.

“The last six years it has rained Westfest weekend, so we’re incredibly happy that the weather pulled through for us this year,” said media co-ordinator Julie Ribi. “We brought the main stage back to Richmond Road for 2015, which we are extremely happy about. It allowed us to integrate the amazing performances we had lined up back into the crowds walking the streets.”

Westfest founder and producer Elaina Martin was also glad to see the main stage back on Richmond Road, saying it brought the festival back to its roots.

“Westfest is the only festival in Ottawa where local residents, businesses, artists, organizers and audiences all gather together to celebrate music, art and life,” Martin said. “We’re so pleased to showcase some of the best talent in Canada, and participate in a celebration of the outstanding people of Ottawa and Westboro Village.”

Those in attendance seemed to be just as happy with the way things turned out.

“We don’t live in Westboro, so that’s why we’re not here regularly,” said Michael Schilder, a Lowertown resident who was at his second Westfest and his first in “three or four years.”

His wife, Reena Schilder, said it was her first time.

“But I enjoy the community atmosphere,” he said. “It’s all very lively, lots of stuff going on in the streets. Lots of little activities.”

Street magicians, roaming food and beverage vendors and short martial arts demonstrations were a few of the events that drew in crowds of spectators.

Even the event volunteers were getting into the spirit of the festival.

Gabe Martin, a first-time volunteer who wanted to “get to know the community,” said that the bustling festival seemed to have a positive effect on its attendees.

“There’s a good vibe going on,” he said.

Started in 2004, the street party has become known as a community touchpoint, something Reena Schilder was quick to point out.

“It does draw people in from other places around the city,” she said. “I think people come to Westfest as a destination.”
