Suspended senator Patrick Brazeau returns return to court Friday, as his trial on assault and sexual assault charges returns from a month-long break.

The trial — in which Brazeau is alleged to have pushed a 40-year-old woman down a stairwell, spitting at her and sexually assaulting her in February 2013 — has been adjourned since May 19.

Before the trial adjourned, defence lawyer Gérard Larocque had raised a February 2012 incident in which the complainant, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, allegedly struck Brazeau.

Larocque’s extremely detailed cross-examination could not be completed by the end of the last trial date, prompting Judge Valmont Beaulieu to request that Larocque move it along when the case resumes Friday.

Brazeau is expected to testify in his own defence, although there has been no indication yet as to when that might be.

Brazeau was kicked out of the Conservative caucus shortly after his arrest in February 2013. He has plead not guilty to the charges.
