Boaters will be able to use locks on the Rideau Canal for free on July 1, Parks Canada announced Friday.

The federal agency said fees will be waived for the first time on a Canada Day on the Rideau and the Trent-Severn Waterway in an effort to attract more boaters and other visitors to the water systems and the communities that line them.

Parks Canada said the Rideau Canal is already seeing more use this season, with a 32-per-cent increase in vessels travelling through in May and a 20-per-cent rise in vessels mooring, compared to 2014.

Canal fees start at 90 cents per foot for use of one lock (outbound and return). Other rates are offered for one-day, six-day and seasonal use of the full 45-lock system.

Lock fees were ordered frozen for three years by the federal government in 2013 after boaters protested steep increases planned by Parks Canada. While mooring charges were not part of the freeze, most also remain at 2013 levels.

Parks Canada is also distributing two-for-one coupons that give boaters extra lock passages until June 30.
