Divers were continuing their search Friday in the Rideau River for the body of man who attempted to flee from officers on Wednesday night, Ottawa police said.

The man disappeared in the river in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood hours after steering his vehicle toward two bicycle patrol officers during a traffic stop at Rideau Street and King Edward Avenue. One officer was struck and suffered minor injuries.

He is believed to be Muhab Sultanaly Sultan, 23, a suspect in the June 14 shooting of a teenager in London, Ont., who was trying to retrieve a cellphone he had left in a taxi.

London police had obtained a warrant for Sultan on a charge of a second-degree murder. They said Friday they were not sending anyone to Ottawa until police in the capital could confirm the identity of the man who is believed to be drowned.

Muhab Sultanaly Sultan is wanted in the high-profile slaying of a teenager trying to trace a missing cellphone in London, Ont.

Police had been hunting for the man after a pursuit of the vehicle from the Rideau Street traffic stop ended on Wiggins Private near the Strathcona Heights Community Garden. A male passenger was taken into custody but the driver escaped into a nearby wooded area.

Efforts to find him with a tracking dog were unsuccessful, but hours later police received calls from residents about a suspicious man in the area of Range Road and Mann Avenue. A police release said the man was observed trying to swim across the Rideau River.

According to police, the man was showing signs of distress and went under the surface as two officers who had entered the water got closer to him.

Ottawa police said the province’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates deaths and other serious events involving police officers, has been called in to aid in the investigation.
