Almost exactly two years after his retirement from a storied astronaut career, Chris Hadfield is taking flight once again. But this time, he’ll be staying a lot closer to firm ground.

The former commander of the International Space Station will be the guest of honour at the Wings Over Gatineau air show on Tuesday, June 30, where he will fly in formation with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds during part of their demonstration.

Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield will fly with the Snowbirds Tuesday at the Gatineau Airport.

Hadfield will be flying a 1960s era fighter plane and, later, an acrobatic display plane called the F-86 Golden Hawk Sabre. He will be joined by another special guest, Maryse Carmichael, the first woman ever to fly with and lead the Snowbirds.

Flight enthusiasts will also be able to see classic manoeuvres including Immelman turns, the Split S, the rolling scissors and the chandelle. More than 15 models of vintage aircraft will be on display or in the air.

The event, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Gatineau airport, 1717 Arthur-Fecteau St., is hosted by Vintage Wings of Canada. Tickets at the gate are $10, but entry is free for members of the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, members of Vintage Wings and for children aged 10 and under. Parking is free.
