Shania Twain fans were not impressed much by the long concession lineups and parking nightmare that marked Saturday’s inaugural concert at Wesley Clover Parks.

The outcry became so heated Sunday that concert organizers took to social media to apologize for the opening night problems at Ottawa’s newest festival venue.

“On behalf of Wesley Clover Parks and our partners in the delivery of the Shania Twain concert last night, we’d like to apologize for any delays, discomfort and inconveniences that occurred during the exit at the end of the night,” read the statement issued on Wesley Clover Parks’s Facebook page.

The 500-acre property, owned by the National Capital Commission, is leased to the Wesley Clover Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by high-tech mogul Terry Matthews. His daughter, Karen Sparks, is the park’s executive director.

Organizers vowed Sunday to “seriously review” the viability of large music festivals at Wesley Clover Parks, and to better prepare for any future events. More than 24,000 people attended Saturday night’s concert — the first major show at the former Nepean National Equestrian Centre, north of Bells Corners, in the city’s west end.

“(We) will only agree to host future events of that magnitude if we are assured that a far more workable plan can be deployed and effectively executed,” Wesley Clover officials said in a statement.

Fans get set for the Shania Twain concert at Wesley Clover Parks on Saturday, June 27, 2015. About 24,000 attended the show, and many were less than impressed with the long lineups and the time it took to get out of the parking lot after the concert.

About $3.5 million was spent to upgrade the facility and groom it as a concert site. But fans Sunday registered a long list of complaints on the Citizen’s website and on social media: huge lineups for food, beer, ATMs and toilets; obstructed views of the stage; a slow, chaotic shuttle system; and parking lots so dark that drivers set off a cacophony of alarms trying to locate their vehicles.

One concert goer, Christopher Flores-Lyons, recorded the amount of time he spent in lineups. He said it was a 92-minute wait for the ATM machine and more than two hours for the hotdog and fries he ate because the concession stand ran out of hamburgers. At the end of the show, the shuttle system was so slow and overcrowded that he walked with his friends for 40 minutes to reach the parking lot on the Nortel campus.

“All in all, the performers were great, but I don’t think I’ll ever go back to Wesley Clover for an event again,” he said.

The Twain concert wrapped up before 11 p.m., but many people said they were not able to leave the site until 1 a.m. because of the chaos that ensued at the end of the concert. The doors for the event opened at 2 p.m. and also featured performances by the Doobie Brothers, Wes Mack and Dan & Shay.
“The shuttle bus wait was longer than the whole Shania set,” complained one concert goer, Karen Watson. “Concert was great, but I’ll never go back to that venue.”
