Ottawa police arrested a man early Wednesday near Manotick after he was found asleep at the wheel of a damaged white truck on the side of the road.
The arrest occurred near Rideau Valley Drive North and Barnsdale Road after the man was found in his white GMC pickup truck at 6:30 a.m..
A source told the Citizen the vehicle had visible damage to its front and the windshield. The source said the driver told police he had hit something with his vehicle days earlier.
The arrest came as police continued their investigation into the fatal hit-and-run death of cyclist Andy Nevin, a 39-year-old father of two, early Sunday morning on Leitrim Road, west of Albion Road.
Nevin was found lying at the side of the road, suffering “extensive traumatic injuries,” paramedics said. His green bicycle was left bent and twisted on the shoulder. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at The Ottawa Hospital trauma unit.
On Monday afternoon, police said they were looking for a white Ford F-250 or F-350 pickup, 2004-2006, with visible front-end damage on the passenger side.
Ottawa police spokesman Const. Marc Soucy said Wednesday afternoon that police had not yet laid charges and would not confirm whether the arrest that morning was connected to the hit-and-run.
